Suggested Routes

From the Twin Cities:

There are several fine alternative routes. Here are our two favorites. Both are close in terms of driving time. The first is a bit shorter by distance, the second a tad farther but more freeway driving. (~3 hours)

Option #1: I-94 east into Wisconsin to Baldwin; north on US 63 all the way to Cable. Follow the US 63 signs carefully as you’ll be making several turns along the way (be especially watchful for where US 63 splits off from US 53 at Trego); 7 miles east on County M.

Option #2: I-35 north to MN 70 at Rock Creek; east on MN 70 (which turns into WI 70) to Spooner; north on US 63 (watch closely for where it splits off from US 53 at Trego) to Cable; 7 miles east on County M.

From Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago:

There are two main alternatives, both roughly equivalent in terms of time. We prefer the first for scenic beauty and generally lighter traffic. The second might be somewhat preferable in bad weather. (~5 hours from Madison)

Option #1: I-39 north to Wausau; continue on US 51 north to Tomahawk; west on US 8 to Prentice; north on WI 13 to just past Glidden; west on WI 77 to Clam Lake; 13 miles west on County M.

Option #2: I-94 west to Eau Claire; north on US 53 to Trego, north on US 63 (watch closely for where it splits off from US 53) to Cable; 7 miles east on County M.

From Duluth/Superior:

There are several fine alternative routes. Our favorite is US 2 east to Iron River; south on County A to Barnes; east on County N to Drummond; south on US 63 to Cable; 7 miles east on County M. (~1.5 hours)
